Friends of Ion Square

The Council have handed over to our Group the maintenance, pruning and welfare of the trees and shrubs in the Gardens subject to discussion with and occasional help from them.

With their blessing, we have created a pathway all the way along the western side of the railings so that proper maintenance can be adopted and the railings themselves can be repainted.

We have also carried out major shrub surgery over the past few months throughout. We have been replanting wild plants and bulbs throughout the wilded areas and have eight 15 foot silver birches arriving in February to be plant as a measured clump joining up the two wooded ares on the west and south boundaries with a winding woodland path placed throughout.

There has been a considerable planting of bulbs and woodland plants in other areas. We also water and spray when necessary all the 30 new fruit and forest trees planted by the Council over the past 4 years. We also carry out constant litter picks and have Sunday afternoon Helpers Sessions open to anyone who wants to come along and help.

We are also helping at least two other groups who want to follow in our footsteps in their own immediate neighbourhoods. We now have about 70 “Friends” on our Friends Group website which anyone can freely join by contacting me or Friends of Ion Square Google Group.

Ion Square is near the entrance to Columbia Flower market on the junction from Hackney Road and Warner Place.
